AWR-428 Practical Internet of Things (loT) Security
October 2, 2025, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
BSC National Energy Center of Excellence, Rm 431/433
Speaker: Tom Praulger, NUARI

Practical Internet of Things (IoT) Security will explore the fundamentals of Internet of Things (IoT) security and gain practical knowledge of how these systems function and where they are vulnerable. The course introduces core IoT technologies, including sensors, communication protocols, cloud connectivity, and the ways data is collected, stored, and shared. Participants will learn how to identify common security challenges such as default configurations, encryption limitations, and exposure to exploitation.
Through guided instruction, learners will practice methods for analyzing network traffic, evaluating privacy policies, interpreting device behaviors, and understanding penetration testing techniques used to assess security weaknesses. The course reinforces key takeaways by encouraging participants to reflect on IoT devices in their own environments and how security principles apply at home and in the workplace.
